Millions of people are struggling to return to a life they were leading before, after being disabled because of a disease, disorder or injury. They often lack comprehensive and expert care that may help to improve the condition or the quality of life. The people suffering from such disabilities also require support to bolster their mental health and overall wellbeing. There is a profound absence of such services in our health care system and Aster Wayanad is aiming to minimise that by introducing the department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Our nation has a huge population of disabled individuals and among the population of Wayanad, this rate is especially high, going as far as 2.46%. Unfortunately, the resources for the medical treatment of the disabled, though better than before, are nowhere near that which is required for effective and timely intervention. Among the disabled population, there is also a large group of children. Early interventions and treatments among them enhance the possibilities of a productive and happy life. The rise of lifestyle diseases like diabetes and the problems of strokes, amputations and ischaemic heart diseases are exaggerating these problems and the right interventions are becoming necessary than ever.
With a vision of improving the PMR services for differently abled of Wayanad and beyond, we have taken a holistic approach that enables our patients to achieve the maximum possible function with our Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department. We have an interdisciplinary team led by a Rehabilitation physician (Physiatrist) and including Rehab nurses, Occupational therapists, Physical therapists, Speech therapists, Psychologist, Social workers & Prosthetist and Orthotist.
